With summer fast approaching, now is the time to be thinking ahead of your security with your up coming holiday. We’ve come up with a list of our top 5 tips to help keep you and your property safe whilst you enjoy a much deserved break in the sun!
- Don’t advertise you’re away… As tempting as it is to upload pics of you enjoying your holiday, don’t post them on social media until you’re home. Try not to leave the car packed with suitcases overnight and avoid labelling your luggage with your home address. To avoid your home looking vacant while you’re away, you can buy timer switches to keep your lights turning on & off automatically.
- Before your holiday, Check ALL security is working… Check all cameras to make sure they’re crystal clear and aimed where you want covering. Ensure that any device / detector that runs on battery, or that uses battery power as a backup, has sufficient life left and any outdoor lights are working as they should. Check your security APPs are all up to date and connecting to the relevant piece of equipment.
- Locking up… Good practise before going away is to create a checklist of all windows, doors and any outside buildings to be checked before you head off, ensuring all are secured and any alarms set. If you have any valuable pieces of jewellery or tools, investing in a quality safe can be a great way of ensuring their safety whilst you’re away. Avoid keeping a spare key outside your home and opt for having a family member or friend look after one instead.
- Having the right home insurance… Even with taking precautions to secure your property, falling victim to crime is unfortunately always a risk. Checking you have insurance and that you have the right cover in place can be the difference between you being able to claim for any losses or losing out. Every policy has limits on how much you can claim, so make sure to check that you’re covered for the full cost of replacing things you own. Don’t forget to check you are covered for any garden tools, bikes or sheds / outbuildings.
- Bank Holiday D.I.Y… A long weekend usually means D.I.Y for a lot of us, which can bring some Fire & Security hazards along the way. To avoid them; Always uncoil electrical extension cables fully, as these can overheat and cause a fire. Never use multi-way adapters when working with high power tools. Flammable liquids should be used in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions and secured correctly according to instructions. Ventilation is key when using adhesives and flammable liquids, by opening windows and doors and always ensure that no naked flame or power tool is close by.
